New collaborative work for an exhibition opening this weekend at Donkey Mill Art Center.
A few years ago, curator Drew Kahuʻāina Broderick invited us to develop a proposal for Revisiting Kealakekua Bay, Reworking the Captain Cook Monument, a group exhibition responding to the Captain Cook Monument at Kaʻawaloa.
We explored a number of ideas along the way, but it was Keith’s idea to make a Captain Cook cake that really sparked something between us. From there, the project expanded into three works: After the Landing and Edible Relic — installations built around cake and cookies — and WE ATE ‘UM, a limited-edition T-shirt. Together, the works move between artwork, edible object, souvenir, and merchandise.
We’re interested in the ways history is shaped by who tells it — who is celebrated, what gets left out, and how stories change as they’re repeated and passed down. The works use consumption, humor, and souvenir culture to play with how those histories are packaged and absorbed.
Revisiting Kealakekua Bay
The exhibition brings together eight artists and collectives responding to the Captain Cook Monument at Kaʻawaloa. It opens Saturday, August 22, from 5–7pm at Donkey Mill Art Center in Hōlualoa, Hawaiʻi Island, and remains on view through December 12.
